32-Year-Old New Jersey Man Charged With Massachusetts Homicide
FITCHBURG, Mass. – According to authorities, a 32-year-old Newark, New Jersey, resident has been charged for fatally beating a man inside his Massachusetts apartment. The suspect then set the victim’s apartment on fire to cover his tracks. The suspect was arrested and is being held without bail.
The suspect, identified as Jose Crespo, arrived for his arraignment Thursday in Fitchburg District Court where the judge entered not guilty pleas to murder and other charges on his behalf.
According to prosecutors, the suspect was one of the two masked and armed men who demanded entrance to Kevin Cabrera’s Fitchburg apartment. The incident took place on 3 December. Once the men were inside the apartment, they tied up 24-year-old Cabrera, beat him up and stole $2,700 in cash. They then set the place on fire.
When the incident took place, Cabrera’s girlfriend and 7-year-old son were in the apartment. However, they escaped unharmed.
The second suspect in the incident is scheduled to face arraignment next week.
Crespo’s attorney did not argue for bail.
