50-Year-Old Drunk Driver Of West Windsor Charged In Crash That Killed Motorist
WEST WINDSOR – 50-year-old Ram R. Thatigutla of West Windsor was charged with death by auto Sunday after he caused a crash that killed a Parlin man and injured a woman.
The suspect was arrested after the 1:04 p.m. crash on Quakerbridge Road near the Quakerbridge Mall. According to police reports, he was allegedly driving intoxicated.
Thatigutla was driving a 2013 Mercedes Benz 350 and was traveling southbound on Quakerbridge Road over the Quakerbridge Road Overpass in the left lane when his vehicle struck the rear of a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The Mercedes then struck a 2003 Yamaha XV1 Motorcycle which was being operated by a man.
The victim was identified as a 55-year-old Parlin man who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second victim, a 48-year-old woman from Lawrence, was driving the Hyundai Sonata who was injured in the collision. She suffered a head injury and was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center’s trauma unit in Trenton.
Immediately after the collision, Thatigutla attempted to flee on foot. He had gone just a few hundred feet south of the scene when he collapsed on the concrete median. Nearby citizens in the areas secured him and waited for the police to arrive.
Thatigutla was taken to Capital Health System at Fuld. He faced multiple charges, including death by auto, assault by auto, leaving the scene of a fatal collision and having an open container of alcoholic beverage in his vehicle.
Several agencies responded to the scene, including the Lawrence Fire Co., West Windsor Emergency Services and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Serious Collision Response Team.
