Date: April 6, 2017

MILVILLE – 31-year-old Michael D. McLaughlin, a Millville officer, has been charged for DWI, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving after he caused an accident on 17th of March.

The location of the accident was the area of West Main Street and Lisa Marie Terrace. The accident happened at about 10:58 p.m.

According to a report, McLaughlin was behind the wheel of a Dodge sport utility vehicle. It was not confirmed what the condition of the officer was while driving and why he left the accident spot.

Mayor Michael Santiago said, “I’m proud of the Millville Police Department for being very transparent. They did an outstanding job in this investigation. With the cooperation of the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office, this is still an active investigation.”

He was suspended with pay after the accident and was released from jail pending a court hearing.

McLaughlin’s history showed that this was the second time he caused an accident from the time he joined the department in 2013.

Before this accident, he was behind the wheel of another officer’s sports car in September 2014 when the vehicle got out of control and ended up hitting the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church on Carmel Road. He was thrown out of the vehicle with the other officer travelling as a passenger. McLaughlin sustained a life-threatening back injury. He was given a plea agreement under which he admitted to reckless driving. As a result, charges for drunk driving and not wearing a seatbelt were dismissed.
