New Jersey Driver Faces DUI Charges After Hitting Pedestrian
According to the police, 33-year-old Marcos Ortega is facing driving under the influence charges after he struck a pedestrian and then continued driving for more than a mile with him hanging out of his windshield.
61-year-old Kenneth Moeller was hit by Ortega as he was driving his motor vehicle north on Route 9 in Ocean Township on Monday evening, according to a report by Philly.com.
Instead of stopping the motor vehicle to check if Moeller was alright, he carried him with his motor vehicle more than a mile and a half. He was finally pulled over by a patrol officer after police officers received reports of an “erratic driver”.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement that he “observed a person halfway through the vehicle’s windshield”.
Moeller, of Lanoka Harbor, was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment where he remains in serious condition as he sustained life-threatening injuries in the accident.
Ortega was taken into custody, charged with leaving the scene of an accident and causing serious bodily injury to another while driving under the influence of alcohol.
WPVI report shows that he is currently being held on $150,000 bail.
